Identifying key reference points
Total duration – ca. 1 hour.
Download the Word document which contains introductions to scientific articles which have been stripped of references. Indicate which sentences contain statements that should be supported by references.
A list of the sentences that require support from appropriate citations is all you need to send me.
Identifying a document’s logical structure.
Total duration – ca. 1 hour.
This document is an example of a highly structured piece of writing. As you have learnt in this course, articles reporting original research have a definite structure: Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion.
This article is a technical report and has a different structure. Read the article and identify the points at which the purpose of the text changes. This exercise is a bit like the pica-pau exercise except there you knew what the sections did – here you have to identify them and their function. Send the list of sections you think there are to me.
Identifying problems with a document’s logical structure.
Total duration – ca. 1 hour.
This document is an edited version of introductions to three research articles. Identify places where you think important information is missing. Describe in your own words what you think the missing sections should be telling the reader.
