Web 2.0 refers to a variety of second generation applications that allow people to make their own web sites, to self-publish, create and upload video and audio files, to network and share information of various types.
Here is a selection of what I would call Web 2.0 applications that are relevant to STM publishing. The list is deliberately eclectic and may extend beyond the boundaries of what should truly be considered Web 2.0. It certainly is not complete.
I have also broken the list down into different categories. Again, this is just a first attempt and can certainly be improved upon.

4. walk2web - Walk. Explore. Have fun walk2web allows you to visualize the connections between sites, while allowing to view, review, bookmark and vote for your favorite sites.

Social bookmarking sites:8. 2collab 2collab is a free online bookmarking tool for professional researchers. You can import your stored references to easily share them with your chosen colleagues or export your library ready for inclusion in your next research paper or project document.
9. CiteULike - everyone's library (sponsored by Springer) CiteULike is a free service to help you to store, organise and share the scholarly papers you are reading. When you see a paper on the web that interests you, you can click one button and have it added to your personal library. CiteULike automatically extracts the citation details, so there's no need to type them in yourself. It all works from within your web browser so there's no need to install any software. Because your library is stored on the server, you can access it from any computer with an Internet connection.
10. Connotea - free online reference management for clinicians and scientists Saving references in Connotea is quick and easy. You do it by saving a link to a web page for the reference, whether that be the PubMed entry, the publisher's PDF, or even an Amazon product page for a book. Connotea will, wherever possible, recognise the reference and automatically add in the bibliographic information for you.
11. Ologeez! A scholarly search site to learn, discuss, and connect with academics, professionals and colleagues.
12. Zotero: The Next-Generation Research Tool Zotero is a powerful, easy-to-use research tool that helps you gather, organize, and analyze sources and then share the results of your research.
Content sharing sites:13. AuthorStream authorSTREAM is a platform for sharing PowerPoint presentations on the Internet. authorSTREAM makes it easier to share your PowerPoint slideshows through blogs, websites, on YouTube and even via iPOD.
14. Bio-Alive Video Share Bio-alive is a life science online video sharing community, and the premier destination to watch and share biology and life science related videos worldwide through the web.
15. FriendFeed FriendFeed enables you to discover and discuss the interesting stuff your friends find on the web.
16. SciVee - make Your Research Known Through Videos, Pubcasts and Postercasts Share your science and technology through publications, posters, papers, or slides combined with video and science communities.
17. Slideshare Join SlideShare, the world’s largest presentation sharing community. Share publicly, privately. Add audio for webinar.
18. Connexions - Sharing Knowledge and Building Communities Connexions is an environment for collaboratively developing, freely sharing, and rapidly publishing scholarly content on the Web.
19. MIT OpenCourseWare MIT OpenCourseWare (OCW) is a web-based publication of virtually all MIT course content. OCW is open and available to the world and is a permanent MIT activity.
20. Scitable - Learn Science at Nature Scitable is an open online teaching/learning portal combining high quality educational articles authored by editors at NPG with technology-based community features to fuel a global exchange of scientific insights, teaching practices, and study resources. Scitable currently contains articles in the field of genetics, and is intended for college undergraduate faculty and students. Future plans involve extension of Scitable to other fields within the life sciences, as well as to other audiences.
Social networking sites:21. Biogang The BioGang is an informal, distributed collection of geeky life scientists who have come together to try and think of cool problems and ideas that can be solved collaboratively.
22. BiomedExperts: Scientific Social Networking BiomedExperts is a scientific social network where you can research, collaborate, and connect with researchers and medical experts worldwide. Join now for free.
23. Epernicus: Where Science Meets The shortest path to people and expertise in your scientific network. Epernicus is the professional network for scientists, started at Harvard and MIT.
24. Mendeley - academic software and research network information Mendeley is free social software for managing and sharing research papers. It is also a Web 2.0 site for discovering research trends and connecting to like-minded academics.
25. Plataforma Lattes Publically accessible of CV's for all scientists funded by the Brazilian government.
26. SciLink Science Connected Find, connect, and share with over 5.8 million other scientists in the SciLink network.
