David Bousfield
Experience Summary:
I have thirty years experience working in and around the STM publishing industry. I have held strategic and executive management positions within a FTSE 100 company and, more recently as an independent contractor, I have worked in the US and Brazil specializing in projects relating to biomedical publishing, education and bioinformatics.
Currently working as an analyst for Outsell, the only research and advisory firm focused on the publishing, information, and education industries.
My key achievements include the launch of Elsevier's first online journals, the commercial development of the Trends in magazine brand, the commercial development of the first scientific social networking portal, BioMedNet and, more recently, the development of e-learning resources to support biomedical research.
Skills & Knowledge:
Leadership, innovation, strategy, implementation, management, marketing, commercial development, biomedicine, healthcare, publishing, Web technologies, informatics, analysis, research, training
Experience Details:
October 2009 – Present: Vice President and Lead Analyst, Outsell Inc, London, UK.
I am responsible for analysis and advisory services focused on the Scientific, Technical & Medical (STM) information sector, including journal, book and database publishing, relevant areas of informatics such as text mining, semantic web, social media tools, and specialized workflow applications such as clinical decision support. I serve as an executive-level advisor and consultant to clients on issues such as electronic publishing and best practices; open access; changing consumer needs; and customer, buyer, and advertiser dynamics in the STM market. I also report on industry financial performance and benchmarking.
April 2005 - September 2009: Self-employed consultant and contracted employee, trading as Ganesha Associates, Cambridge, UK.
Visiting Researcher, Trainer and Consultant. I was employed by the Brasilian Research Council (CNPq - 2006) and by the Federal University of Pernambuco (2007, 2008) to identify the causes of poor publishing performance in Masters and Doctoral students and to design and implement remedial training courses. These proved to be extremely popular and I was invited to give variants of the course to students and medically qualified staff at the main maternity referral hospital in Recife (IMIP), and at the Federal universities in Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia.
Systems Expert. Between July 2006 and July 2007, I was employed as a systems expert by Lockheed Martin Management Systems Designers. Reporting to NCBI Director, Dr David Lipman, I worked with senior scientists and software engineers to develop tools to measure end-user behaviour within the Entrez database system. This involved the development of a database to capture, structure, verify and analyse terabytes of daily transaction data, plus the creation of statistical models describing how large informatics databases and tools such as PubMed, BLAST, Genome Projects, Homologene, etc are actually being used by researchers, clinicians and the general public and how software modifications affect this behaviour.
Freelance consultant. Various projects for customers including:
- Developing a marketing strategy for DataPharm
- Developing a day-long seminar on the role of Web 2.0 tools in translational medicine for Douglas Connect.
- Chairing a session for the British Library/Wellcome on possible roles for a UK version of PubMed Central.
- Helping to develop a Molecular Libraries Initiative (PubChem) workshop program for NIH.
- Defining possible roles for ontologies in pharmabiotech product development (Elsevier)
- Contributing to an EPS Outsell survey on the market perception of open access publishing.
- Performing a business strategy review of opportunities in evidence-based medicine for Bazian Healthcare Solutions
- Carrying out an acquisition assessment of an evidence-based medicine content provider for Thomson MicroMedex in Denver, CO.
- Providing strategic advice to Wolters Kluwer Health on print/electronic publishing opportunities for their medical journal portfolio.
- Developing technology assessment reports on computational systems biology and data mining for Elsevier.
- Creating a series of Focus reports on new business trends in drug informatics, evidence-based medicine, and consumer health for EPS Outsell Ltd
- Conducting market research on laboratory information management software for Atrium Research Inc.
May 2003- April 2005: Director Business Development - Life Sciences, Elsevier Life Sciences, London, UK.
I was responsible for identifying and implementing business development opportunities across all business units within Elsevier Science's Life Sciences division. Examples include:
- Devising a strategic growth and acquisitions plan for MDL, a chem-informatics company based in San Leandro, CA (now owned by Symyx).
- Developing a series of online-only Drug Discovery Reviews journals - a first for Elsevier.
- Launching BiotechSelect, a product sales package for the US biotech industry, which introduced a new usage-based corporate pricing metric to ScienceDirect and led to the development of a database publishing strategy for pharma-biotech content.
October 1997 - May 2003: Publishing Director, BioMedNet/Current Trends, London, UK.
I had profit and loss responsibility for approx. 100 staff and a turnover of ca. £20m. Significant achievements during this period included:
- The launch of BMN Reviews, the first subscription-based product on the BioMedNet platform.
- The commercial integration of print and online advertising sales businesses.
- The launch of the drug discovery journals Targets, BioSilico, and Current Opinion in Pharmacology.
November 1979 - October 1997: Editor and subsequently Director, Elsevier Magazines & Newsletters Division, Cambridge and Oxford, UK
I was Editor of Trends in Neurosciences from November 1979 until 1987. Subsequently, as Publisher, I launched over ten magazines and newsletters including Drug Discovery Today and Trends in Molecular Medicine. I was responsible for launching Elsevier's first online journal, Immunology Today Online, with OCLC in 1994. I was a core member of the initial ScienceDirect development team. I also played a key role in the acquisition of The Lancet and subsequent development of The Lancet Online.
